Airport Overview

Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) is the primary gateway to Xi'an, the ancient capital of China and home of the Terracotta Warriors, located approximately 47 km northwest of the city centre in Xianyang. The airport handled over 47 million passengers in 2019, making it one of China's busiest regional airports. Terminal 5 (T5), a massive new facility, opened in 2023 as part of a major expansion project, serving as the new primary hub for operations and capable of handling 83 million passengers annually at full capacity.

WiFi Availability

Free Wi-Fi is available at XIY under the "XAAIRPORT_WIFI" network. As throughout China, social media and Western apps (Google, WhatsApp, Facebook) are blocked by the Great Firewall; a VPN configured before arrival is necessary to access these services.

Transport to City Centre

Airport Metro (Line 14)

Xi'an Metro Line 14 (Airport Line) connects T5 directly to Xi'an's city metro network. The line connects with Line 3 at Wenshang Road Station, providing access to the city centre in approximately 35–45 minutes total. Fares start at CNY 5. Trains operate from 06:00 to 23:00 with 8-minute peak frequency.

Bus Services

Airport express buses (Lines 1–6) serve key Xi'an destinations including the Bell Tower, High-Speed Railway Station, and the Tang Dynasty theme park district. Journey times range from 40–70 minutes. Fares are CNY 20–30. DiDi is also convenient and affordable.

Taxi and Rideshare

Taxis are available from the taxi rank outside each terminal's arrivals exit. The journey to Xi'an city centre (Bell Tower area) takes approximately 50–60 minutes and costs CNY 130–180 including tolls. DiDi provides app-based transparent pricing and is generally preferred by tech-savvy travellers.
