Airport Overview

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU) opened in June 2021 as a second major airport for Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, located approximately 50 km southeast of the city centre. The airport is designed to eventually handle 90 million passengers per year when fully expanded, making it one of the largest airports in China. Chengdu Shuangliu (CTU) continues to operate as Chengdu's first airport, and the two airports together form one of China's few dual-airport city systems. Sichuan Airlines and several other carriers have transferred key operations to TFU.

Terminals

• Terminal T1: Handles domestic operations primarily for Sichuan Airlines, Chengdu Airlines, and other carriers transferred from Shuangliu.
• Terminal T2: International terminal handling international routes, select domestic operations, and premium carriers. Features dedicated check-in zones and international lounges.

WiFi Availability

Free Wi-Fi is available at Chengdu Tianfu Airport under the network "TFU_Airport_WiFi". Registration with a Chinese mobile number is required through the landing portal. International travellers without a Chinese SIM should purchase one at the airport. As with all mainland China airports, a VPN installed before arrival is required to access Google, WhatsApp, and other Western services blocked by the Great Firewall.

Transport to City Centre

Chengdu Metro Line 18

Chengdu Metro Line 18 connects Tianfu Airport to central Chengdu. The line runs from TFU directly to Tianfu Square (city centre) in approximately 30–35 minutes. Fares are CNY 10–15. Trains operate from approximately 06:30 to 23:30 with peak-hour frequency of 5–8 minutes. This is the fastest and most affordable city-centre link.

Bus Services

Multiple airport express buses serve key Chengdu destinations including Chengdu East Railway Station, Shuangliu (the other airport), and major commercial districts. Journey times are 40–80 minutes. Fares are CNY 20–40.

Taxi and Rideshare

Taxis and DiDi are available from the designated zones outside T1 and T2. The journey to central Chengdu (Tianfu Square/Chunxi Road) takes approximately 50–70 minutes and costs CNY 120–180 including tolls.

Travel Tips

• Chengdu is the gateway to the Sichuan Giant Panda Breeding Research Base — book a morning visit to see pandas during their active feeding time (08:00–10:00).
• Chengdu has two airports: TFU (Tianfu) and CTU (Shuangliu). They are 100 km apart — always confirm which airport your flight uses to avoid missed departures.
• Metro Line 18 is the single most important piece of travel advice for TFU visitors — fast, cheap, and connects directly to the city centre.
• Install a VPN and DiDi before arriving in China; both are essential for navigation and transportation.
• Chengdu's Sichuan cuisine is famously spicy; if you have a low heat tolerance, communicate this when ordering (ask for "bu yao la" — no spicy).
• China's 144-hour visa-free transit policy applies to Chengdu for eligible nationalities.
