Airport Overview
Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX), nicknamed "the Starfish" for its distinctive five-pronged terminal designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, opened in September 2019 and is located approximately 46 km south of central Beijing, straddling the Beijing-Hebei border. The airport was designed with a capacity of 72 million passengers per year at full build-out, with Phase 1 handling 45 million. China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, and several international carriers operate from Daxing, while Air China and other legacy carriers primarily use Beijing Capital (PEK).
Terminals
- Main Terminal Building (single integrated terminal): The iconic starfish-shaped terminal contains all gates across four piers (C, D, E, and F). China Southern Airlines occupies the primary east pier; China Eastern is on the west pier. International gates are concentrated in Pier F.
- Satellite Concourse (future expansion): Additional pier planned for future capacity increases as traffic grows.
WiFi Availability
Free Wi-Fi is available throughout Daxing Airport under the network "ChinaAirport_PKX" or airport-branded portals. Connect and register with a Chinese phone number or scan a QR code. International visitors without a Chinese SIM may face some registration difficulty; however, many areas also have open hotspots. Note that the Great Firewall of China restricts Google, Facebook, WhatsApp, and most Western social media — a VPN may be required for unrestricted access.

Travel Tips
- China now offers 144-hour visa-free transit for citizens of many countries; check if you qualify to visit Beijing without a full visa during a layover.
- The Great Firewall blocks Google, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and most Western apps in China; download a VPN before arrival as it cannot be installed once in China.
- Mobile payments (WeChat Pay and Alipay) dominate in China; foreign cards are often not accepted at small vendors. Download WeChat Pay and link a card before travel, or carry CNY cash.
- Daxing and Capital Airport (PEK) serve different airlines — confirm which airport your flight uses before booking transport.
- Air quality in Beijing can be poor; check the AQI forecast and consider a pollution mask if visiting during winter haze periods.
- Language barrier: English signage is good in the airport, but staff at restaurants and taxis may speak limited English; download a translation app such as Google Translate (offline mode).
- The Daxing Airport Express train is fast, affordable, and by far the best way to reach central Beijing.
