Airport Overview

Muscat International Airport (MCT) is the primary gateway to the Sultanate of Oman, located approximately 28 km west of Muscat city centre. The airport opened its state-of-the-art new terminal in 2018, designed to handle 24 million passengers per year with architectural elements inspired by Omani heritage, including a striking wave-shaped roof referencing the Al Hajar mountain range. Oman Air serves as the national carrier and primary hub operator, and the airport handles an increasing number of low-cost carriers including Air Arabia Oman.

Terminals

• Main Terminal (Single integrated terminal): All international and domestic flights operate from the unified 2018 terminal building. The terminal is divided into concourses A, B, and C, with Oman Air primarily using Concourse A and B, and other carriers assigned to C.
• Royal Terminal: Dedicated VIP and state flights terminal separate from the main building.

WiFi Availability

Complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout Muscat Airport under the network "MCT_Airport_WiFi". Connect and complete a simple registration via the landing page. There is no charge and no strict time limit. Connection speeds are generally very good, supporting video streaming and conference calls. SIM card purchase booths are also available near arrivals for travellers needing a local Omani number.

Transport to City Centre

Bus Services

Mwasalat public buses operate services from the airport to Muscat city centre (Ruwi bus station) and other key areas. The journey takes approximately 45–60 minutes. Fares are very affordable at OMR 0.5–1.0 (USD 1.30–2.60). Buses depart from the dedicated bus bays outside the arrivals exit and run throughout the day from early morning to late evening.

Taxi and Rideshare

Official airport taxis (white cabs) are available from the clearly marked taxi rank outside arrivals. There are no meters; negotiate or confirm the fare before departure. The journey to central Muscat (Ruwi/Muttrah) costs approximately OMR 6–12 (USD 15–31). Uber operates in Muscat and provides app-based transparent pricing; Careem is also available.

Car Rental

Major international car rental companies (Hertz, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar) and local Omani operators have desks in the arrivals hall. Oman's road infrastructure is excellent, and self-drive is highly recommended for exploring the country's dramatic landscapes.

Muscat Airport offers several premium lounge options for business class passengers and eligible cardholders.

• Oman Air First Class Lounge (Concourse A): Exclusive first class lounge with a la carte dining, premium beverages, private showers, and spa treatment rooms.
• Oman Air Business Class Lounge (Concourse A): Business lounge with hot buffet, beverages, and comfortable working spaces for business travellers.
• Plaza Premium Lounge (Main Terminal): Accessible via Priority Pass, DragonPass, and pay-per-use. Full dining, showers, and relaxation facilities.

Several hotels are conveniently located along the airport road and in key Muscat districts such as Seeb and Al Khuwair.

• Crowne Plaza Muscat OCEC: Adjacent to the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre, approximately 8 km from the airport, with modern facilities and multiple restaurants.
• Radisson Blu Hotel Muscat: About 10 km from MCT in the Al Khuwair business district with pool and excellent dining.
• Sheraton Oman Hotel: Approximately 20 km from the airport in Ruwi, a historic landmark hotel in the heart of old Muscat.
• Ibis Muscat: Budget-friendly option approximately 12 km from the airport, clean and functional with a restaurant.
• The Chedi Muscat: Luxury resort approximately 18 km from the airport near the Al Ghubrah beachfront, one of Oman's most acclaimed hotels.

The modern terminal features a diverse selection of dining options spread throughout the departures area.

• Tikka Nation (Concourse A): Indian-inspired restaurant serving biryanis, tikka dishes, and fresh breads; popular with South Asian travellers.
• Starbucks (Main Terminal and Concourses): Multiple outlets providing coffee and light snacks throughout the terminal.
• Burger King (Concourse B): Fast-food chain with full menu open during flight operations.
• Costa Coffee (Concourse C): Coffee and pastries near the international departure gates.
• Al Maha Restaurant (Arrivals hall): Traditional Omani cuisine including shuwa (slow-cooked lamb) and halwa dessert, great for a genuine local meal.
• Dunkin' (Main Terminal): Donuts, sandwiches, and freshly brewed coffee for quick departures.

• The airport is approximately 28 km from central Muscat; plan transport in advance, especially for late-night arrivals when public buses are limited.
• The Omani Rial (OMR) is subdivided into 1,000 baisa; currency exchange desks and ATMs are available in the arrivals hall.
• Oman's summers (June–August) are extremely hot and humid; the best time to visit is October to March.
