Airport Overview

Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) is the main international gateway to the UAE capital, located approximately 30 km east of Abu Dhabi city centre. The airport serves as the primary hub for Etihad Airways, the UAE's national carrier, and handled over 23 million passengers annually pre-2020. A transformational expansion project — the Midfield Terminal Building (MTB) — opened in late 2023, adding a massive new terminal with a capacity of 45 million passengers per year, making AUH one of the largest airport terminals in the world by floor area.

Terminals

• Midfield Terminal (Terminal A): Etihad Airways' primary hub terminal and new flagship building opened 2023. Handles the majority of Etihad flights and select partner airlines. Features 65 gates, premium lounges, extensive retail, and dining.
• Terminal 1: Legacy international terminal, handling some international carriers and charter flights during the transition to the MTB.

Transport to City Centre

Bus Services

The Abu Dhabi Department of Transport (DoT) operates bus routes from the airport to central Abu Dhabi. Route A1 connects the airport to the central bus station at Al Wahda Mall. Journey time is approximately 40–60 minutes. The fare is AED 4 (approx. USD 1.10). Buses run from 06:00 to 24:00 with 30-minute frequency.

Taxi and Rideshare

Abu Dhabi Taxi and Careem (which operates as the official taxi-booking platform in Abu Dhabi) are available from the taxi ranks outside arrivals. The journey to Abu Dhabi city centre takes 25–40 minutes depending on traffic and costs AED 70–120 (USD 19–33). Uber also operates in Abu Dhabi. Taxis to Dubai are available for approximately AED 250–350 (1.5–2 hours).

• US travellers: AUH is one of very few airports outside the US with pre-clearance facilities; US-bound passengers clear US Customs and Border Protection before departure, saving time on arrival in America.
