Chengdu Tianfu International Airport Guide (CTU) – Chengdu

IATA: CTU ICAO: ZUTF Chengdu, China 2 Terminals

Airport Overview

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (CTU) is a brand-new mega-airport that opened in June 2021, replacing the older Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (also IATA code CTU) as Chengdu's primary international gateway. Located approximately 51 km southeast of Chengdu's urban center in the Tianfu New Area, the airport is one of the most advanced and largest airports constructed in 21st-century China. It is designed to ultimately handle 90 million passengers per year across multiple construction phases.

The airport serves as a major hub for Sichuan Airlines and a secondary hub for Air China. Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, is a rapidly growing metropolis and popular tourist destination known for its panda research base, spicy cuisine, and proximity to UNESCO World Heritage sites including Emei Shan and Jiuzhaigou.

Terminals

Terminal T1 is the first terminal of the new airport, currently handling the majority of domestic and international flights. The terminal features a sweeping roof inspired by Sun Bird totem imagery from the ancient Sanxingdui civilization. It offers extensive retail, dining, and lounge facilities spread across five passenger levels, with multiple concourses extending from the main building.

Terminal T2 is planned as part of the airport's second phase expansion and is under construction. Once complete, it will significantly expand capacity for both domestic and international operations. During the current single-terminal phase, T1 handles all scheduled commercial flights.

💡 Note that the older Chengdu Shuangliu Airport (IATA: CTU, ICAO: ZUUU) is being phased out as Tianfu Airport takes over all traffic. As of 2023–2024, the majority of domestic and international flights have transferred to Tianfu. Verify your terminal before travel as the two airports are approximately 70 km apart.

WiFi Availability

Tianfu Airport provides free WiFi throughout T1 under the network "Tianfu Airport Free WiFi." Authentication requires a Chinese mobile number for SMS verification, similar to other major Chinese airports. International travelers without a Chinese SIM card may request assistance from airport information staff. The airport's WiFi infrastructure is modern, built to current specifications, and generally offers good speeds for a facility of this scale.

Transport to City Center

Chengdu Metro (Line 18)

Chengdu Metro Line 18 connects Tianfu Airport directly to Tianfu Square (the city center) and the southern high-tech district. The express service to Tianfu Square takes approximately 40 minutes. Fares are CNY 10–18 depending on destination. Trains run approximately 06:00 to 23:00. The metro station is integrated into T1's lower level. Line 6 also provides access to other parts of Chengdu including the university district.

Bus Services

Multiple airport shuttle bus routes serve central Chengdu, Tianfu New Area, and surrounding Sichuan cities. Fares to central Chengdu are approximately CNY 30–50. Bus stops are located outside the arrivals area of T1. Journey time is 60–90 minutes depending on traffic and destination.

Taxi and Rideshare

Metered taxis and DiDi rideshare services are available from designated stands outside T1's arrivals area. The fare to central Chengdu (Tianhe/Jinjiang district) is approximately CNY 150–220 and takes 45–70 minutes depending on traffic. DiDi is widely used and often more convenient than hailing a taxi.

Travel Tips

  • Chengdu Tianfu Airport is far from the city (51 km) — budget at least 2 hours for the trip to central Chengdu at peak times; Metro Line 18 is the most reliable option.
  • The airport is very new and large; signage is modern but predominantly in Mandarin. Download a translation app before traveling.
  • Chengdu is famous for its spicy Sichuan cuisine — try authentic dishes at the airport if you are on a tight schedule and cannot explore the city.
  • Visiting the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding? The base opens at 07:30 and closes at 18:00; it is most rewarding before 10:00 when pandas are most active.
  • Download WeChat Pay or Alipay before traveling in China — many restaurants and shops operate on cashless payment systems that do not easily accept international cards.
  • A VPN is essential for accessing Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, and most Western social media from within China. Install and test your VPN before departing your home country.
  • Sichuan province is earthquake-prone; familiarize yourself with hotel safety procedures upon check-in.
